A2A ♥ Gene is FIT

Theories, quotes and best of all lots of pictures!
Spoilers for Series 3 up to episode 5

The closer you get to it, the less you know..

At the beginning of the episode Gene denies working with Bevan. Bevan is equally non-talkative about his and Gene's past. Alex interrogates him in the corridor many times over the course of the episode, still to no avail. Bevan definitely knows something about Gene and Sam, but it's becoming obvious to Alex he's not going to tell.

"It's not what Gene did. It's what he gets people to do."
"And what did he get you to do?

Bevan's pushy attitude even has Ray on his guard. When thinking back he realises it was Bevan who tried to shoot Frank Hardwick and the tension is unmissible between them afterwards.

"You are a good copper. Aren't you Ray."

Later, Bevan comes into Gene's office making him instantly uncomfortable. He threatens Gene with a promise that he will reveal all about Sam Tyler's 'disappearance' if Gene gets up to anything naughty. We discover he was there the day Sam died and through Alex's snooping, we find out he was the one that took the photograph of Sam's car in the river.

"You weren't so cocky three years ago - the night Sam Tyler disappeared"
"You know, there's a line. We don't cross it"
"Where was that line with Sam Tyler?"

[Sam Tyler Jacket]
Stylish. Seductive. Burnt.

Sam's jacket has had quite a lot of attention this series and as soon as Bevan leaves Gene's office Gene tries to get into Alex's drawer to take it. Later, he crow bars it open and takes the jacket and Sam's file (which was mysteriously missing last episode) outside to burn them.

Gene's face looked so sad when he threw the jacket into the fire. I like that he opened the file and took out Sam's photo, looking at it for a while before throwing it into the bin. Alex finds him and is obviously annoyed and wants to know what's going on.

"Whatever you're looking for, it doesn't exist"

Then the line which made us all think of Sam in Life on Mars.
I won't say much, i don't want to spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen it.

"Sometimes, you just have to take a leap of faith"

[Ray's stars]
Chris? Did you see..

This week it's Ray's turn to see the magical edge of the universe stars. I thought his were a lot more striking and beautiful than Alex's. I'm sure i spotted a tear in Ray's eye at one point too..

"Like at the edge of the world. Like we were bloody astronauts"

I'm hoping that last part was a subtle hint at the AWFUL end of the US version of Life on Mars.
Which i'm sure many would agree with me on - was bloody awful.

At the police gala Chris mentions to Shaz that Ray saw stars. There is a look between them, and from that moment they seem closer. They share something. They've finally bonded.

[Danny Boy]
I am dead, as dead I well may be..

The incredibly eerie scene where Ray sings Danny Boy. The sound of the audience disappears and we're entranced by Ray and Shaz's voices (rather beautiful i thought) as she comes to help him get over his stagefright.

The emphasis on the line and I am dead, as dead I well may be.. shocked me to my core.

Are they both dead too?

(Lyrics and wonderings by qthewetsprocket here)

[Murdering Bastard]
When did you grow wings and a halo?

The dressing room scene was so tense and wonderfully acted. The shock and disbelief on Alex's face, the pure boiling anger on Gene's. Bevan said a lot, but still he didn't reveal much.
I'll let the dialogue do the talking:

GENE: You murdering bastard.
BEVAN: When did you grow wings and a halo? Shall we tell her Gene? Tell her why you got me to falsify evidence at a crimescene? What you were covering up about your mate Sam Tyler? Go on! Tell her what you did to him! And you call me a murdering bastard. Nah. The only difference between us, is that you got away with it.

Gene pulls out his gun and Bevan escapes.
I don't believe Gene killed Sam and if he did, it was to help him (if that makes any sense).

[The Truth]
You wanna know the truth Bevan?

This scene blew my mind.
First a stand off between Bevan and Ray, then Chris appears from behind the bins. After Bevan is told to kick his gun away by Ray he hurries to his pocket and Gene shoots him in the shoulder. (Genesis' 'Mama' starts to play and works PERFECTLY) Gene walks up to Bevan who lies struggling on the ground and squats down next to him.

You wanna know the truth Bevan?

Gene's back is to the camera, all we can see is Bevan's reaction. He screams in horror, looking up at gene, shaking and scraping his legs on the floor trying to crawl/roll away - he was truely frightened. Alex rushes over to ask Bevan what Gene had said and receives the same treatment - a look of horror and a scream.

Alex runs after Gene, desperate to know what he told Bevan that made him act the way he did.

I told him the truth.

Yes Gene. You did.
I've heard a lot of ideas about what Gene could have said. But what if he didn't say anything? What if he showed Bevan something. I've always believed that the creepy dead copper is Gene and once theanonsisters suggested that he could have revealed his half blown off face to Bevan the scene suddenly made more sense. When Alex ran over, could Bevan see her gunshot wound too? If so, this means Gene would be controlling what Bevan could see, as the people who rushed over to help him when Alex approached were not scared of her. If that's the case, then Gene has a lot more power in this world then we originally thought.

Hope you liked the spam.
This is by far my favourite episode this series.
Feel free to comment with your own theories but if you happen to know anything spoilery please keep it to yourself, some of us want to play detective for a little while longer!

I was thinking it over about the showing thing, and I was along the same lines as to why Bevan was scared. It would make sense that if he was seeing how people died that Gene's (if he is the dead copper) and Alex's wounds would scare him. Though you have to wonder why it took so many moments. Maybe he was showing Bevan a brief glimpse of how Bevan himself died before revealing the dead copper wound? I mean, an hour is a year in Alex's continuity. Whose to say it isn't similar to everyone else?

Sorry if that seems a little jumbly. I just noticed that there were a couple of seconds before the screaming began.

That's a very good point. There was quite a pause between the squatting of Gene and the screaming of Bevan. I still don't think Gene said anything though - and if he did, wouldn't Chris and Ray of heard?

I like your idea that he could show Bevan how he died.
That would truely horrify anybody.

Love you icon btw!

bevan looked (and sounded) properly scared when gene "told him the truth", and he freaked out when alex approached him. if dead ghost copper = gene, and he showed bevan his half-scarred face, and then he saw alex's bullet wound to the head, his freakout would make total sense! *nods*

The sound of the audience disappears and we're entranced by Ray and Shaz's voices (rather beautiful i thought) as she comes to help him get over his stagefright.

it was very beautiful. *applause for deano and montse*

meanwhile: yay picspam!

I must admit, the second time i watched it i did get a little tear in my eye when they sang. It was very beautiful - and equally haunting.
*applauses them too*

That episode was so good :) I've worn out all my theories so far, but that "Truth" scene shocked me to my very core. So beautifully done, it scared me.
I don't think the dead copper is Gene (I just think it's too obvious, but as soon as I read the "Gene showing his face blown off" theory I instantly loved the idea.

It just scared me so much.

Great episode, and once again fantastic analysis and picspam. Love it :) x

There really are a LOT of theories going around at the moment, but i love them all. A show has to be pretty amazing to get so many people's minds spinning. The truth scene was.. so amazing. I can't even put it into the right words to describe how much i loved that scene.

It would seem a little obvious for it to be Gene - but maybe that's because we have so many theories! 'Ordinary' folk, who don't search for meaning in every word might be shocked. (If it does turn out to be Gene.)

Thanks sweetie <3 ILU xx

The part at the beginning with the jacket was perplexing. It was almost like an advert. I have to say, I hadn't picked up on the 'leap of faith' connection until now.

The emphasis on the line "and I am dead, as dead I well may be" shocked me to my core.

I noticed that! :S The thing I'm most mystified by is the fact that Ray and Shaz are clearly experiencing similar things to Alex, to what extent we don't fully know, but that Chris hasn't been shown to be seeing/feeling any of these things. It surprised me he didn't have a Life on Mars moment in episode 4 - I figured all he, Shaz and Ray all would, but not Gene. Which just keeps me guessing.

theanonsisters suggested that he could have revealed his half blown off face to Bevan. If so, this means Gene would be controlling what Bevan could see. If that's the case, then Gene has a lot more power in this world then we originally thought.
That is very interesting, and something I'd never considered. Aah I just want to KNOW.

And beautiful picspam as always, by the way. :)
1st-May-2010 06:33 pm (UTC)
Haha! It was almost like an advert. For Sam. Then his jacket.
The leap of faith might just be a coincidence, but i just like to think nothing is a coincidence in this show =P

Yes! What is going on with Chris? He is left out of all the moments. I have a feeling he is going to die in the next few episodes (i'm not sure why..). Also, i think he might end up betraying Gene. He did in the last series, and he is already treating Keats like his new boss. Still running around doing what he says.

*pulls out hair*

I have no theories of my own right now, because my brain becomes more and more confused with each episode, but I just wanted to say that I agree that this scene was amazing. COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY AMAZING.

I don't think they could have picked a better song to include in this scene than "Mama", so, so perfect.
1st-May-2010 06:34 pm (UTC)
There really is too much to take in isn't there! *brain breaks*

I've fallen in love with Mama now.
Everytime i listen to it i get chills.
Good old Phil Collins/Genesis and their amazingness.

Thanks Hippy! You're so nice to me ♥

I think so too. You couldn't see Gene saying anything or hear it either.
It really was an amazing mind!fuck of a moment.

I got tears when Alex saw her stars. I just love stars - a lot. I cry when i see them sometimes in real life because they remind me of my nana. So i totally understand your tears. Ray's face was beautiful. His eyes welled up and he actually looked afraid. His hard-man image being torn off for one tiny special moment was so touching.

Beautiful picspam, so so lovely.

This episode was also beautiful and quite haunting. It still boggles me how far this show has come, from Alex shagging thatcherite wankers and Gene's doodling to THIS; this mind-fucking, gorgeous, dark and utterly compelling piece of television. Sometimes I miss what it used to be because I loved it for different reasons compared to LOM, but this episode just..gah.

I love the theory that Gene showed Bevan his blown off face, and Alex's bullet wound to the head in turn. It makes so much sense. The thing is, I don't know if they're keeping the casual viewer in mind at all- so perhaps Gene being the ghost cop WOULD be too obvious...did he actually make an appearnece this episode?

Thanks for sharing! :D

Thanks sweetie :D

It was such an amazing episode. I could watch it over and over. I totally know what you mean! The first series is so funny and light, and this series seems so DARK and mind boggling.

Ghost cop didn't appear in this episode no, although i don't expect all the casual viewers will expect him to be Gene. I'm going to be shocked if he isn't though!

The commentaries have me thinking... You say that Gene may have more power in this world than previously known. One can infer from that idea that he has more knowledge about the world as well; otherwise, what good is the power?

And really, it makes sense. Remember season one, when Alex acted completely batshit all the time? And she'd say something that made her sound totally off her rocker, act stalker-like towards her mother, or call everyone "constructs," and Gene would breeze by it with more or less, "Right. Onto the next thing..?"

At the time, I thought that him and his crew ignoring the biggest part of her unstable behavior was due to the nature of the world. A lot goes towards maintaining the fantasy, in which Alex being a DI is important, so she can't be sectioned. Thus, they ignore her excessive nonsense, only giving her looks or petty insults. The show goes on as intended.

However, if Gene is more aware of what's up in this world than we thought, if he's NOT just an ignorant player trapped in the game or a construct running a program, he could have been purposefully directing everyone's attention away from her behavior. Railroading her into staying with CID. After all, he's the Guv; he leads everyone's opinions. Note he doesn't inquire overmuch about this "Molly" that probably isn't even in Alex's file. He doesn't ask her ANY of the obvious questions we'd ask a troubled coworker and friend who misses her child and is kind of disturbed. Because he's maintaining the status quo, in which Alex is his quirky DI, and she's not so crazy as to be removed from gameplay entirely and placed in a rubber room, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

Or maybe it's late at night, and I'm thinking too hard!
2nd-May-2010 12:10 pm (UTC)
I would like to think that it means he has more knowledge too.

You're so right! I used to think, why isn't Gene looking at her like she's talking absolute rubbish. One of my favourite Gene-ignoring-Alex's-madness moments was when she said "What if you're real?" and he just said "What it, you were quiet".

In the first episode Shaz and Ray sit and listen to Alex as she talks about being shot in the head and how she got to their world. It's also when the letters D-E-A-D appear and Alex faints. Shaz seemed really interested in what Alex was saying even though Chris was a little confused (as usual). It really made me wonder...

Gene asked about Molly once, but that was only when he was angry with her in series 2, the same scene where she said that she was from the future. Maybe he was trying to get her to forget about her old life by getting so angry with her because he knows she doesn't have one to go back to.

I totally agree with you about Gene trying to maintan the status quo.
You're certainly not thinking too hard! xx

Now that you mention it, I do remember going, "whaaaaat?" to that "What if you're real?" exchange." Either Gene knows more of what's up than he'll say, or something is very strongly railroading everyone along this plot.

Though this reminds me of how much Gene tried to keep Sam from going back to "Hyde...."
3rd-May-2010 09:27 am (UTC)
That's definately what i'd be saying if somebody said that to me! I'd be like, "..of course i am. What are you talking about".

There's also the scene in the safe (which drives me mad) when they're running out of air and Gene's lighter goes out when Alex goes "Gene?" as if to tell him something and he just says "I know". I know it's nothing amazing, but i've always wanted to know what Alex was going to say, that Gene somehow knew. Creepy.

Omg he did! He was always trying to stop him going there. Although we know about Sam's 1973 backstory. I really hope they will tell us about why Alex "put in for" being sent to Fenchurch. I NEED to know her 1980 backstory! I hope they reveal it in episode 8.

I love this post so much. Beautiful picspam. This ep really is mind-blowingly amazing.

Gene revealing his half-blown off face to Bevan reminds me of BowieClown/Alex's dad. They've done that once, would they do it again? Personally I hope they don't, simply because I want Gene to be alive and real, even though that's looking increasingly unlikely. :(

Gene has a lot more power in this world then we originally thought.
I like this. A lot.

The way he tosses the jacket into the flames... I like that he opened the file and took out Sam's photo, looking at it for a while before throwing it into the bin. Gives me a little bit of comfort, but still. Oh, Sam. *cries*

2nd-May-2010 12:13 pm (UTC)
Thank you <3 <3
One of the best episodes i think.

Ahh that's true (about the Bowie Clown) but i hadn't made that connection before you mentioned it. Alex wasn't really trying to find out who the Bowie Clown was though, that's why i think we were all so shocked when we found out it was her dad. She was just scared of him. She is scared of dead cop of course, but with him it's more of "who ARE you?" and less of AHHHHH RUN!!!

The scene where Gene burns Sam's jacket is HEARTBREAKING :'(
I really really REALLY hope that Gene didn't kill Sam.
Only three weeks until we know though..

Wonderful picspam! :)

For me this was one of the *top* A2A episodes ever.

Everyone was fantastic, and it was emotional not only for the characters, but the viewers as well. :O I had so many favourite moments; but I really loved the moment between Ray and Shaz when she finds out he saw the stars too! <3
3rd-May-2010 09:28 am (UTC)
Thank you so much! :D

*high fives*
I totally agree!

That little look they had between each other was really sweet. They've definately bonded now - i hope it's not because they're both dead :( (although i'm beginning to think that's definately the case). I always get emotional at A2A now =P
2nd-May-2010 09:10 pm (UTC)
And another lovely picspam! :)

What a great episode this was. I am really, really dying to know how they are going to wrap it all up.

As for the astronauts, do you know if LoM US was completely rewritten, or just the ending? Stupid idiots, don't they know a good ending when they see one?
2nd-May-2010 09:34 pm (UTC)
Thank you ^__^

It really was AMAZING.
I'm STILL stunned by the truth scene, and i've rewatched it several times now!

I'm not sure if it was completely rewritten, but i've seen some clips and everything seemed really bad and Americanized. The ending though.. i don't know why they decided to change it. But it was just DIABOLICAL.
